Question: Why do we
teach writing?
Answer: Well, one
reason is to create citizens as writers. That’s at least one of our goals, and
we ought to give our students the opportunity to use writing in their role as
citizens. Public writing. Participatory writing. The writer as citizen.
Comment: Worth thinking about. I never directly asked
students to write letters to the editor, for example, or letters to Congress
Persons. It’s authentic writing and I should have. Mea Culpa. RayS.
